Visitors to Santa Fe who are interested in the natural world often find themselves in need of a local map or a guidebook for reference. There are a number of resources here: Travel Bug springs to mind immediately; Alpine Sports, downtown, and REI, in the Railyard, keep local trail maps; and the BLM State Government Office, south of town, is a large and overlooked choice. But if you want to accompany your map-hunting with a pleasant atmosphere of books, coffee, delicious snacks, a knowledgeable staff, and a fireplace, treat yourself to Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse, downtown at the corner of Water and Galisteo Streets.

Collected Works has been Santa Fe’s favorite independent bookstore since 1978. They keep a remarkable variety of books in stock. If something new and noteworthy has been published, it’s likely to be right in front of you when you walk in the door. Local authors, living and dead, are well represented. And Collected Works supports the local literary, artistic, musical, and political community with a steady program of author lectures, book signings, live music, poetry readings, and political forums. You can keep track of these offerings on the Events tab of the bookstore’s website – together with their constantly updated recommendations, reviews, and interviews.

But don’t get so distracted that you forget to check out their maps and nature books!
